Does a Dead Controller Mean Chip-Off Is the Only Option?

Usually not. Chip-off is the method of last resort, not the first thing tried. Most drives that look completely dead can still be reached through the controller itself. Chip-off exists for the smaller set of cases where that path is gone entirely.

Chip-off recovery means physically removing the NAND flash chips from the drive’s circuit board and reading them independently, on hardware that has nothing to do with the SSD’s own controller. Most drives that arrive here are not actually this far gone: a drive that is merely misbehaving, not detected because of a firmware fault, or stuck read-only is often still solvable through recovery for a corrupted SSD, which leaves the drive and its controller intact. Chip-off is the method that works when the controller itself, the chip that manages every read and write to the flash, is damaged beyond use: burned, cracked, or destroyed by a short elsewhere on the board.

It is also destructive and irreversible. Once the chips are off the board, the drive cannot be reassembled into a working unit again. That is why it is never the first thing attempted. Chip-off is reserved for the drives that path can no longer reach.

Newer NAND generations only raise the stakes here. Samsung’s V10 generation packs over 400 layers into a single die, and what happens when Samsung’s 400-layer V10 fails concentrate far more data into the same physical chip-off job than older, thinner NAND ever did, and the trend is only accelerating industry-wide.

The distinction matters because the two methods answer different questions. Controller-level recovery asks the controller to cooperate long enough to hand over the data. Chip-off skips the controller altogether, because there is no controller left capable of cooperating.

The actual signs

When Does an SSD Actually Need Chip-Off Recovery?

Chip-off gets considered when a drive shows zero response on every interface after a proper evaluation, or when the controller chip or the board around it is visibly damaged: burnt, cracked, or affected by a liquid or short-circuit event.

A drive earns a chip-off evaluation only after that level has been checked properly, the same controller diagnostics used across our SSD repair and recovery services for every brand and interface: no detection in BIOS, no response over any interface, and no signs of life from the controller chip under diagnostic power. Visible board damage around the controller (scorch marks, a cracked chip package, corrosion from a liquid or short-circuit event) is the other common trigger, because that kind of damage often takes the controller down with it even when the NAND flash sitting next to it is untouched.

One honest limitation worth stating plainly: chip-off cannot work around hardware-based encryption where the decryption key is generated inside the controller itself and never leaves it. If that controller is dead, the key can die with it, and reading the raw NAND produces encrypted data with no way to unlock it. This is one of the few genuinely unrecoverable scenarios in solid-state storage, and no method, chip-off included, changes that.

Outside of that specific case, a dead controller with intact NAND flash is exactly the situation chip-off exists for.

How it actually works

The Chip-Off Process, Step by Step

The chips come off with controlled heat, not force. Once removed, they’re read on dedicated hardware that has no connection to the original, failed controller.

The chips are removed using a hot air soldering station, never a generic heat gun, because the temperature and airflow have to be controlled precisely enough to melt the solder without damaging the pads underneath. Flux is applied first to help the heat transfer evenly across the chip. This step alone is where an untrained attempt does the most damage: too much heat, or heat concentrated unevenly, can lift or crack the pads the chip needs in order to be read afterward.

This is a different discipline from board-level soldering repairs (see what SSD repair can fix for the more common, non-destructive kind), because a chip-off case has already ruled that path out. Once a chip is off the board, it is cleaned and then connected to a NAND reader through a matching socket, then to a computer over USB. What comes back at this stage is not a folder of files. It is a raw dump of scrambled data, because SSD controllers spread data across chips in a pattern designed for speed, not human readability, and that pattern lived inside the controller that is no longer available to reverse it. Reconstructing the actual files means working out that pattern from the raw dump itself and reassembling it algorithmically, chip by chip, until what comes out the other end is a normal, readable file structure.

Every one of those steps happens once, on the original chips. There is no retry that doesn’t start with heat again, which is the core reason this method is reserved for drives nothing else can reach.

What turns a recoverable chip-off case into an unrecoverable one

Every one of these has come up on a drive that arrived after someone else already tried something.

  • Removing a chip with a generic heat gun instead of a controlled hot air station, which lifts or cracks the pads the chip needs to be read.
  • Reflowing or resoldering a chip back onto the board to test it, rather than reading it independently on dedicated hardware.
  • Running a manufacturer repair or format tool against a drive already showing zero response at the controller level.
  • Storing removed chips loose, exposed to static or moisture, before they reach a NAND reader.

None of these are unreasonable things to try. They’re just built for a drive with a working controller, and a drive that needs chip-off does not have one. The same caution applies to liquid or physical damage: don’t power the drive on to check it. If a drive has already been through one of these attempts, that history matters, and it’s worth mentioning during the evaluation rather than after.
